How to Play the Fictional Families Road Trip Game
Step 1: Choose who goes first
Decide which player will create the first fictional backstory. You can take turns in order, let the passenger always go first, or just jump in whenever someone spots an interesting vehicle.
Step 2: Pick a vehicle
The storyteller selects any car, truck, van, or motorcycle visible on the road. Look for vehicles with interesting details: bumper stickers, roof racks, unusual colors, visible passengers, or anything that sparks imagination.
Step 3: Study the clues
Take a few seconds to observe details about the vehicle. What kind of car is it? How many people are inside? What’s strapped to the roof? Are there any stickers, dents, or distinguishing features? These become the foundation of your story.
Step 4: Create the backstory
Invent an elaborate fictional story about the people in that vehicle. Include specific details like:
- Their names and relationships
- Where they’re coming from and where they’re going
- Why they’re making this trip
- What secrets they’re hiding
- What’s really in those bags/boxes/coolers
- Any drama or unusual circumstances
Step 5: Tell the story
Share your fictional backstory out loud with everyone in the car. The more detailed, dramatic, or absurd, the better. Commit to the narrative and deliver it with confidence.
Step 6: Switch storytellers
After one person finishes their story, the next player picks a different vehicle and creates their own backstory. Continue taking turns for as long as the game stays entertaining.
Optional Step 7: Connect the stories
For advanced players, try weaving multiple vehicle stories together into one interconnected narrative. Maybe the minivan driver and the motorcycle rider are ex-business partners. Perhaps three different cars are all unknowingly heading to the same wedding. Create an entire highway universe of connected characters.
Variations:
- Set a time limit (60 seconds) for each story to keep things moving
- Have other players ask questions the storyteller must answer in character
- Vote on the best/funniest story after several rounds
- Focus on specific themes like “conspiracy theories” or “unlikely heroes”
Equipment Needed
Fictional Families requires zero equipment to play, your imagination is the only essential tool. However, a few optional items can enhance the experience and help you remember the best stories from your journey.
None (Basic Play)
All you need is creativity and a willingness to spin ridiculous tales. Simply spot vehicles and start inventing stories out loud.
Phone Camera (Optional)
Use your phone camera to snap quick photos of particularly interesting vehicles (safely, when parked or as a passenger) to reference later or use as prompts for creating stories after you’ve stopped for the day.
Voice Recorder or Notes App (Optional)
Use a voice recorder to record the stories as they’re told so you can replay the best ones later. Hearing yourself commit to an absurd narrative about a minivan full of escaped circus performers never gets old.
